Video game dreams and Yumble! rant
Nov. 14th, 2010 06:36 pmGeorge Kamitani of Vanillaware interview.
Aaahh, this just reminds me how much I want our Yumble! to be successful. I've wanted SoG to become a super cool strategy game, but not as linear as most strategy games I've playedand way better than Hoshigami in regards to that non-linear aspect.
I love FFT to death since I think they pulled off an otherwise extremely silly story (no, seriously, THINK ABOUT IT) pretty well! The battle system was really fun (and fun difficult thank God) and the generic units had their charm. I can't speak for the FFTAs because I am just not interested. FE9 and FE10 though...uhhh...ok, I'm sorry, I don't see good character development or good story in that game at all. Battles were fine and fun in 9, but come 10, I...ok, seriously, larger battles does not mean more exciting.
Where was a I going with this? Right, um, so, yeah, SoG should be a cool tragic game. I've planned a couple of branches, but I wanted to leave the main goal to the player! Like, depending on which character you want to achieve happiness or success, another group of characters will be put on the falling end of the scale.
There's also a side story part featuring a different set of main characters whose storyline changes based on what you do in the main game. I'm still playing with the idea of having the side story influence the main, too, but, hmm, I don't want to make the player feel obligated to play two stories at a time. Hahaha, maybe for some endings. Aside from the side story characters (who you can kill off and have a different cast of characters take over), you can even kill your own hero and have him/her replaced with someone else (usually the person who killed him/her)!
Anyway, you can probably tell it's pretty complicated, potentially needlessly so. CS major please help me. I also have the 1936 AU, Counterpoint, which I'd like to become a mystery fighting game! I like 2D fighting games, and...c'mon, there needs to be a fighting game with an interesting plot around here. I hate the whole "fighting games have no plot" deal, and don't throw BlazBlue and Guilty Gear in my face as counterexamples because while they're fun, their stories are pretty awful.
It's not impossible to make a good story with lots of characters! Also, crappy crossovers? Too many (and why do they tend to be SRPGs?). I want a good one. I wrote a rough initial concept for CP, but there's one aspect that nags me with how stupid it is, so I'll probably rewrite it when I have a better feel of 1936 Los Angeles. I mean, how many stories are set in 1930s LA? Usually it's Chicago or NY...I have a lot of research ahead of me, I know that much!
So wait, wait, why did I post that interview up there? GOOD QUESTION. Kamitani was talking about how he wants to make games for the rest of his life and make the things he wants to make, and, hey, I feel the exact same way. Before I die, I would like AT LEAST CF to be out there, but ideally, I'd like to put out everything. I want to die knowing, God, even if it sucks, at least I finally got it out there. At least I made something.
Kamitani's not looking for profit (and I am not at all under the impression that Yumble! will be a successful company), and just wants to create. CS will help me find a job to live off of and will also help me flesh out Yumble! on the side. If there's one thing I know I've done all my life, it's making stories. My writing may be amateurish, and my plots may be crap, too, but whatever. I actually like this crap of mine.
........I really miss CiNG. ;__; I wanted to read Matt's story! I wanted to watch Ashley grow up! I wanted to see a sobered up and cool Kyle Hyde! *cries* Well...at least I still have Vanillaware. Please grow well, VW! Speaking of small artsy companies, even though Ico freaked me out (s-s-s-so open), I'm very interested in The Last Guardian.
I have not gotten a reply from the person who can help me with my CS major switch. Ugh, I just hope I can do it. My math SAT scores are pretty awful, but but...a 4 on the AP Calc test should help, right??? S-SOBBB. I ONLY WISH I WAS SUPER BRIGHT TYPICAL ASIAN WORKAHOLIC ITALLMAKESSENSENOW FREAK UGGHH. I don't even get computer hardware or software that well. OTL whatdoyouMEANI'mignoringmyphilosohpyhomeworkandtest?!?!
